The Lady 2.0
Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, L’Oreal McCollum, MSW, LSW, M.Ed., is a clinical social worker, educator, consultant, and advocate, specializing in the areas of behavioral health, sexuality/gender studies, and media culture.
Her earliest professional vocation in the area of human sexuality came in the role as a Sexuality and Relationships Editor for a female-oriented e-zine. Through her experience in this role, she discovered that her expertise and self-motivation could be highly effective in the area of philanthropy, thereby garnering experience as an outreach volunteer and HIV/AIDS peer educator at Planned Parenthood and AID Atlanta – an AIDS service/advocacy organization.
Her passion for educating young adults continued into her undergraduate years when she produced and hosted a popular college radio show at Kennesaw State University (where she later earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication with a concentration on Broadcast Journalism and Media Studies). The show entitled S.L.A.M. Session with L’Oreal centered on sexuality issues facing students and immediately became a breakout hit. Shortly after its initial airdate, L’Oreal garnered the attention of college-based MTV- affiliate network mtvU, and was selected as a co-host for world-renowned sexologist Dr. Ruth’s show, Sex CRED with Dr. Ruth in 2007.
Commencing in 2009, L’Oreal worked as a social services coordinator (during her 1st year internship) for Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Youth First program. In this role, she worked to identify youth at high risk and to provide crisis intervention, short-term supportive counseling, and referrals to individuals and groups of sixth- through eighth-grade students in Youth First-established schools.
During the same period, she devoted time as a peer educator for Security on Campus, a national non-profit organization devoted to educating high school students about safety issues in college (from alcohol consumption to sexual assault). The following year, L’Oreal trained as a psychotherapist at Mazzoni Center, Philadelphia’s leading LGBTQ health and wellness center, in fulfillment of her clinical internship.
Currently, L’Oreal is pursuing a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University (the premier institution of accredited graduate-level sexuality education in the United States), where she also completed her Masters in Clinical Social Work studies. In addition to working for the Department of Behavioral Health & Intellectual disAbility Services, where she is responsible for the planning, development, and management of special projects across the City of Philadelphia’s behavioral health system, L’Oreal serves as the owner and operator of Ask L’Oreal LLC: Consulting & Education.
